The Missionary Novels of Nineteenth Century China

ABSTRACT

Patrick Dewes Hanan (1927-2014) was a New-Zealand-born academic who was a professor of Chinese Literature at Harvard University majoring in pre-twentieth century vernacular fiction. In the article “The Missionary Novels of Nineteenth-century China” published on Harvard Journal of Asiatic Studies, he presents the overview of missionary novels in China during the nineteenth century and describes the fictional career of certain prominent missionary writers of the time. This is a partial translation of the article.
