The accumulative stories in Vietnam

Abstract

Researchers have not reached an agreement in defining the nature of accumulative story, because its chain-like structure also appeares in other group, type, or sub-type of stories thanks to the diversity of topics and plots in reality. V. Ia. Propp proposed a definition for accumulative story by deviding it into 11 different types. Studying 26 accumulative stories that belong to various ethnic groups of different language families in Vietnam, this article sorts them in two types: 13 stories in the type of “order away or follow” that belongs to the group of animal stories, and the other 13 stories in the type of “benificial exchange” that belongs to the group of daily-life stories. This article is intended to intrigue academic attention for accumulative stories in Southeast Asia.
