Department of Vietnamese Literature

Department of Vietnamese Literature is responsible for teaching the subjects of literary history from the classic period to modern/ contemporary period. The Department also undertakes the subjects of literary genres (poetry, novels, short stories), literary authors (Nguyen Trai, Nguyen Du, Ho Chi Minh, etc.).

The Department of Vietnamese Literature was formerly known as the Department of Vietnamese Literature and Literary Theory. Since 2007, due to the development needs of the Faculty, the Department of Literary Theory and its lecturers have separated to establish the Department of Literary Theory and Criticism.

I. Functions and tasks:
- The Department of Vietnamese Literature has the function and task of training regular and non-regular bachelors in literature, training masters in Vietnamese literature, training doctors in Vietnamese literature.

- Total number of teaching staff: 8, of which Associate Professors: 4, Doctors: 4.

II. Training:
Bachelor training (University):
The Department is responsible for teaching the majors of Literature, Linguistics, Han Nom, a total of about 30 subjects with about 90 credits, or about 1,200 periods. Participate in managing and teaching the Talented Bachelor program at Ho Chi Minh City National University. HCM, Literature subject of Gifted High School (Ho Chi Minh City National University).
Postgraduate training:
Training in Vietnamese Literature (Graduate) and Vietnamese Literature (PhD).
Training in Master's degree (Graduate) in Vietnamese Literature: Teaching 18 courses including 36 credits, 540 periods.
Training in Doctoral degree (PhD) in Vietnamese Literature: Teaching 21 courses including 42 credits, 630 periods.
III. Scientific research:
Regarding scientific research, the Department identifies the university as a scientific research institution, and to teach well, lecturers themselves must also be researchers. To enhance scientific research activities, the staff in the Department have tried to take advantage of scientific research funds, textbooks, and translations of the School, National University, and the Ministry to promote research work. In addition, through the Ho Chi Minh City Literature Research and Teaching Association, we have cooperated with external publishers to widely serve the society.

In order for research to meet the requirements of the profession and not fall behind the world research situation, we have urgently supplemented by translating and summarizing international research achievements. Therefore, we have organized translations, scientific conferences, and then published books to disseminate to specialized researchers and graduate students, final year students. Faculty-level scientific conferences organized and co-organized by the Department have addressed new issues of real scientific significance with a modest, economical budget supported by the University. In addition, there are annual Youth scientific research conferences organized by the Faculty and School. We also organize scientific research for students. Many individuals and student groups have achieved high awards in scientific research. In 2005 and 2007, student scientific research topics guided by Professor Vo Van Nhon won first prize at the Ministry level (also two first prizes of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Ho Chi Minh City in those two years). In 2007, Dr.

Le Thi Thanh Tam also guided a group of students in scientific research to win the Ministry-level Encouragement Prize and the City Youth Union's Eureka Prize.

In scientific research, we are interested in meeting the needs of the city and the Southern region. The Department has carried out a scientific research project at the "National University Key" level: Survey, evaluation, and preservation of Southern Vietnamese national language literature in the late 19th century - early 20th century. This is a large-scale project with the participation of: 15 researchers inside and outside the Department; 9 young staff, 12 graduate students, master's students, excellent final-year students and dozens of collaborators. Currently, the scientific research project at the "National University Key" level: Survey, evaluation, and preservation of Southern Vietnamese national language literature in the period 1930 - 1945 chaired by the Department has also been approved and is preparing for implementation.

IV. Team building:
Assigned by the Faculty, the Department has sought out the most deserving final year students to retain the Department. These are students in the top 3 rankings, with good moral qualities, passion for research work, and good foreign languages. The process of recruiting lecturers is conducted publicly, with a long-term monitoring process from previous years.

To strengthen the team, according to the school's policy, the Department continues to recruit candidates with academic titles and degrees, giving priority to those with doctoral degrees and associate professor degrees. In addition, for young staff, the Department and the Faculty have a policy of creating maximum conditions for these staff to continue studying and researching to obtain a doctoral degree in the country, especially encouraging them to study abroad to receive this degree through the scholarship program of the Ministry of Education and Training or direct contact. We are also very interested in studying, exchanging, and interacting internationally to develop expertise. In recent years, a number of officials have been sent to work and study abroad, such as Associate Professor, Dr. Doan Le Giang, Dr. Le Thi Thanh Tam, and Lecturer Le Thu Phuong Quynh.

From December 2023, the Department of Folklore was dissolved, and the Department's personnel were transferred to the Department of Vietnamese Literature.

From 1995 to 2002, it was the Department of Cultural Studies and Folklore with the task of training university-level subjects of Vietnamese culture, Southern folklore, Vietnamese folklore, Poetics of folk songs, Fairy tales in the eyes of scientists... From 1975 to 1995, it was a part of the Department of Ancient - Modern - Folklore Literature.

From 1995 to 2002, the Department of Cultural Studies and Folklore was responsible for training undergraduate students in the basic subjects of Vietnamese culture, Southern folklore, Vietnamese folklore, folk poetry, fairy tales under the eyes of scientists... Professors in the department also participated in postgraduate training in Vietnamese literature, guiding doctoral theses on folklore.

From 2002 to present, the Department was renamed the Department of Folklore because the school established a department under the school (now the Faculty of Cultural Studies).

In addition to the training mission, the Department is also responsible for the annual practical internship for over 200 third-year students.
